Water management policies constitute a fundamental issue in the sustainable development of the Mediterranean region, particularly with regard to the agricultural sector.
In the last two decades several Mediterranean countries, both from North and South Mediterranean, have undergone to a period of remarkable changes in their water policies. For this reason addressing water policy evaluation is important to enhance sustainability in the region.
In spite of the policy dialogue and cooperation undertaken by the north and south Mediterranean countries, one issue remains on how to use a generalised evaluation approach to assess policies implementation across all the region (EU and non-EU countries).
The SWAP project
SWAP project aimed at stimulating communication and dialogue on the evaluation of water policy sustainability in the Mediterranean agriculture. Sustainability goals, indicators and water policies have been selected for the assessment exercise, which has been carried out on a full participatory base, also considering the most commonly known sustainability principles, as well as the social needs at local and regional level.
The Final Conference
The Conference on “Framing sustainability in water policy evaluation” is the final event of SWAP project. The Conference will bring together the SWAP partners and the different local and regional key-actors, with the aim to: i) secure a good dissemination of results beyond the local stakeholder fora established in the case studies; ii) improve the awareness of policy makers and politics on the need of linking policy implementation with societal, local needs and with sustainability criteria and iii) seek stakeholders’ agreement on the most appropriate regional approach and method to evaluate water policies in the region. In addition, the conference will attempt the regionalisation of the assessment method
